BATTLE OF BERGENDAL

The commando of Louis Botha, consisting of more or less seven thousand men and twenty cannons (some were Long Toms), control the railway line between Belfast and the headquarters of Kruger to the east.
They are up against nineteen thousand British with eighty two cannons.

The battle of Berg en Dal commenced on the 27th August with an offence by the cavaliers. This offence was followed by the usual artillery and bombardment. Buller was well aware of the tactical key to the stronghold as held by Botha. This was the big red “koppie” close to the farm Berg en Dal, a mixture of terrible rocks, stacked on top of one another over a distance of three acres. If he was able to conquer the “koppie” he will be able to divide the Boers and jeopardise their route of retreat. The difference between this battle and Spioenkop, is that here, support could not be given from either the front, nor from behind. Botha entrusted the “koppie” to sixty of his best men, the legendary ZARPs, members of the Republican Police force. They were given a pom-pom (a quick firing, automatic canon) and a simple command: protect to the death.

SIEGE OF ELANDSRIVER / BRAKRIVER / BUFFELSHOEK 3 – 16 AUGUST 1900

The British wanted to defend the Pretoria-Mafeking railway line and placed a guard post on the farm Brakrivier of which Colonel Charles Owen Hore was in charge. The camp was situated on a low laying plateau next to the road. The camp contained about 500 men, of which 299 came from the Queensland Imperial Bushmen (volunteers from Australia – who joined the British in their fight against the Boers).
The rest were from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rhodesian Field Force.
There were heaps of supplies stored at the Camp.

As a result of numerous setbacks encountered in the Western Transvaal, Lord Roberts decided to evacuate the remote outpost. The patrols of the outpost were continuously involved in skirmishes with the Boers. He sent General F. Carrington with 1000 men as well as six cannons to assist the move of the outpost to Mafeking. ANTHEM OF THE TRANSVAAL

Kent gij dat volk vol heldenmoed
En toch zo lang geknecht?
Het heeft geofferd goed en bloed
Voor Vryheid en voor recht.
Komt, burgers! laat de vlaggen wapp’ren,
Ons lijden is voorbij;
Roemt in de zege onzer dapp’ren:
Dat vrije volk’zijn wij!
Dat vrije volk,
Dat vrije volk,
Dat vrije, vrije volkzijn wij!

Kent gij dat land, zo schaars bezocht
En toch zo heerlik schoon;
Waar de natuur haar wond’ren wrocht,
En kwistig stelt ten toon?
Transvalers! laat ons feestlied schallen!
Daar waar ons volk hield stand,
Waar onsze vreugdeshonten knallen,
Daar is ons vaderland!
Dat heerlik land,
Dat heerlik land,
Dat is, dat is ons vaderland!

Kent gij die Staat, nog maar een kind
In ‘swerelds Statenrij,
Maar tog door’t machtig Brits bewind
Weleer verklaard voor vrij?
Transvalers! edel was uw streven,
En pijnlik onze smaad,
Maar God die uitkomst heeft gegeven,
Zijn lof voor d’eigen Staat!
Looft onze God!
Looft onze God!
Looft onze God voor land en Staat!

GET INVOLVED

How does one get involved in the preservation of the Boer Heritage Sites?

Here are some examples:

• If you would like to do some travelling in order to visit some of the heritage sites, please contact us and let us know where you live and where you would like to go. We will then forward you a list of sites where you could pop in and take some photos. You could then report back to us. We would like to know more about the general upkeep of the sites, the correct coordinates, etc. Sometimes it is easy to find the sites, and at other times it’s a real challenge. Interested persons, who would like to get involved in this way, must please be aware that we have not visited all of these sites ourselves as yet. Therefore we may not know of the existence of sites or their exact location. We are currently trying to update our records with regards to all existing heritage sites, so your assistance would be welcomed.
• Should you have a flare for languages and like to write, you could get involved for example by writing an article about what happened at a battle field. You can then send it to us to be published on our web-site including your bibliography, of course. You may even be able to assist us with translating from Afrikaans to English.
• If you would like to offer financial help with regards to the conservation of the Boer Heritages, please contact us for further information.
• If you would like to donate any items dating from the time of the Boer Republics or earlier, you are most welcome to do so.
• If you would like to be responsible for the upkeep of a specific heritage site in your area, please contact us so that it may be noted. You will then be advised when you will be able to commence this task.
• You may have already visited some heritage sites where you have taken photographs. You may wish to donate some of these to be placed on the web-site. We would be grateful if you would.
• Please come and assist us if you are aware that a clean-up is being organised in your area, yet another way to get involved!
• If you are aware of any other heritage sites that are linked with the Boer history, for example: British Gardens of Remembrance, Block Houses, Forts or even Black Concentration Camps, please could you notify us so that it may be placed on record, as they also link to the Boer history.

Should you know of any further less known or unknown information regarding the Boer History, please contact us at: info@boervolkerfnisbewaring.co.za
